Ocean City-Wright Firefighters Battle Mobile Home Fire
At 6:45 Wednesday morning 911 dispatchers received a call for a structure fire at 700 Tyner St. The caller advised “there’s a lot of smoke.” Ocean City-Wright and Fort Walton Fire Units were immediately dispatched to the scene.
At around 6:47 an Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Deputy arrived and reported that the mobile home was “Fully inflamed, with fire coming out the front.” The Deputy began trying to confirm if everyone was out of the home. Within four minutes of receiving the call Ocean City Wright Fire Companies arrived on scene, confirmed the mobile home was “Fully Involved”, and began attacking the fire.
Less than two minutes after arriving on scene, members from Engine One were putting water on the fire, and entering the structure. Engine Three arrived on scene seconds after Engine One and stretched a second hose line into the mobile home to assist with fire attack and search. The fire was quickly knocked down by Ocean City Wright Firefighter’s. The fire was declared out, and the search for occupants was completed by 07:00.
All occupants were out of the mobile home before fire crews arrived on scene. One person was home at the time of the fire and woke up coughing from the smoke. The woman immediately realized that the home was on fire, and quickly escaped. The woman reported that they did have a smoke detector, but it was not working, and it failed to alert her to the fire.
One patient was transported to the hospital by Okaloosa County EMS for smoke inhalation. No other occupants or fire fighters were injured during the incident.
The mobile home was completely destroyed by the fire. Damage to the structure and contents is estimated to be around $40,000.00.The cause of the fire is still under investigation by the State Fire Marshall’s Office.
It is important to note that the occupant’s smoke detector was not working. The occupant was extremely lucky that she woke up. We recommended to check your smoke detector every six months, or when the time changes. If you do not have a smoke detector the Ocean City-Wright Fire Department will be happy to come out to any home in the district and install one at no charge. Bottom line, smoke detectors save lives. Please ensure yours is in working properly.
