Firefighters Perform Extrication at Accident
Fort Walton Beach,
FL
On December 31st, 2008 at 10:35 a.m. firefighters from the Mary Esther Fire Department were dispatched to a traffic accident at the intersection of Mary Esther Blvd. and Hwy. 98. Minutes after MEFD Engine 11 arrived on scene they requested an additional Engine Company to help extricate one patient. The “T-Bone” type accident left one patient trapped in a silver Pontiac Sunfire.
Ocean City Wright Fire Control District Engine Three was immediately dispatched to scene to perform the vehicle extrication. An AirHeart Helicopter was also requested, as well as Fort Walton Beach Fire Department Engine Six to establish a “Landing Zone” for the Helicopter.
OCWFCD Engine Three arrived on scene at 10:46 and immediately began setting up their extrication tools, including “The Jaws of Life.” Engine Three utilized Hydraulic spreaders and cutters to pry the door open and cut through the door pin. Less than ten minutes after arriving on scene the crew from Engine Three had opened the vehicle and was assisting the Mary Esther Fire Department in transferring the patient to the awaiting ambulance.
Okaloosa County EMS transported the patient from the scene to the AirHeart Helicopter landing at Mary Esther Elementary.
The patient’s name and condition cannot be released.
