Firefighters Respond Vehicle Rollover in Front of Fire Station

Sunday morning crews from the Ocean City- Wright Fire Control District responded to a two vehicle crash on Eglin Pkwy. The accident occurred almost directly in front of Ocean City Wright Fire Control District Station Two in Shalimar. The firefighters on duty were involved in their morning activities, checking their apparatus and tools, when they heard the wreck occur. Captain Mike Taylor reported that he had heard the collision from inside the station. The Firefighters at the station immediately went to investigate. One of the damaged vehicles was pulling onto the ramp of the station as the firefighters made it to the front of the building. The other vehicle, an SUV, had rolled over and was just yards away on Eglin pkwy.

Captain Mike Taylor on Engine Two immediately reported the accident involving two vehicles, and also advised that they had three patients. The dispatch report for this incident shows Engine Two dispatched at 08:30:13, en route to the call one second later, and on scene one second after that. Shortly after his initial report Captain Taylor requested an additional Engine Company. Ocean City-Wright ALS Engine One was dispatched and an additional ambulance.

A Gulf Flight Medical Helicopter was also dispatched to the scene. However the closest helicopter was out of the area. Okaloosa County EMS paramedics decided to transport all of the patients via ambulance.

A total of three patients were transported to Fort Walton Beach Medical Center by OCEMS. One patient was transported as a “Trauma Alert”.

The most severely injured patients had been driving the SUV, which had rolled over. Ocean City Wright Firefighters who responded to the call reported that all of the occupants had been wearing their seatbelts. It is well documented that seatbelts save lives. In the event of a rollover occupants can easily be thrown out of the vehicle and sustain life threatening injuries. In this case it is very possible that the use of their seatbelts saved the occupants of the vehicle.

No information on the condition of the patients is available at the time of this release.
